Godemiche: What Is Body Positivity?

What is Body Positivity by My Tickle Trunk on Godemiche

Recently, I worked with Godemiche on a post to discuss the most central question within the body-positive movement: what is it??

You can read the full post over on Godemiche (and I hope you will), but here is just a sample of what body positivity can mean for you:

It’s for everyone. Loving your body is for every person experiencing self-doubt around their physical experience, and this doesn’t just mean size. Our bodies have a lot going on, and society has a lot of ingrained behavior that likes to tell us what is right and wrong – but that in itself is wrong. The only person who can decide you look good, is you.

The Best Types of Lingerie for Plus Size Bodies

DearLady USA lingerie plus size

We all have that outfit that makes us feel like a boss; we strut around, owning that piece of clothing and knowing exactly how good we look. But sometimes we want some of that confidence to transfer to the bedroom, where typically, clothing doesn’t have a big presence.

The bottom line is if it makes you feel good – wear it! There are NO rules, and you have every reason to wear sexy lingerie. But as a plus sized woman, staring at a wall of lingerie options can sometimes make it feel like none of it is meant for you or wants to make you feel beautiful. In those moments, it’s good to have some old faithfuls, and that’s where these might come in handy…

Body-Positive Review: Bandelettes (+ Giveaway!)

Three colours Bandelettes in black, white and beige poking out of a black skirt on legs

Summer is such a lovely time for dresses, and even better, it’s a socially acceptable excuse to not wear pants for 3-4 months. However, the heat isn’t just in the air, it’s also between your thighs; those beautiful, thick thighs rubbing together like a cricket’s legs creates a pretty painful rash which, for the sake of simplicity and whimsy all at once, I’m going to refer to as chub rub. If you’re 18 and skinny, I don’t expect you to understand – I didn’t start getting it until I was 24 and yet also at my lightest weight ever – but this rash is more than irritating. It makes it impossible to walk; at least impossible to walk like a human – walking like a penguin? Check.

“Plus” Size: That 4-Letter Word

“Plus” Size: That 4-Letter Word #plusisequal

Since losing a decent chunk of weight in adolescence and narrowly avoiding heading into high school as a plus-sized 13-year-old, an obsession formed. Hovering anywhere from a size 10 to a roomier size 12 for the past 15 years, I always figured that no matter how much weight I gained or lost, I would always be fine as long as I wasn’t a “plus size.” It just wasn’t a possibility, and in my mind, if I hit that point, then I had lost the war and life would end as I knew it.

Well here I am – universally staring at the lower end of a size 14, which is officially deemed as plus size (or size 12 if you’re Forever 21 and feed off the crushed souls of women everywhere) and guess what? I’m not writing this from beyond the grave – I’m fine. But it’s taken some time to get here.

I’m Not Unhealthy, You’re Just An Asshole.

Body positivity my tickle trunk overweight health fuck you

I’m going to forgo the word picture I normally like to paint as an intro to body positive posts, and just get to the point: my “health” does not give you a free pass to criticize my weight.

Yes, I’m overweight. The only entity who knows this more than I is the waistband of my jeans, so don’t act like you’re the first unique snowflake to notice. You note the weight of myself and others with the tone of judges at a dog show, and when I call you out for fat-shaming, you bring up the socially acceptable, thinly-veiled excuse for being a judgmental twat: “It’s bad for your health.”

That Crooked Smile

that crooked smile body positivity my tickle trunk

They say that conventional attractiveness is often dictated by how symmetrical your face is, with facial symmetry influencing perceived traits such as beauty, health, and generally good genes. I know I’m not conventionally hot, but if I may say so myself, I’m pretty damn happy with my appearance, and believe me, my face is anything but symmetrical. In photos, my right side is my good side, and I want to set fire to the photos taken from the left; they look nothing like how I see myself, and this is in part to my smile.

Clothing: My Body’s Judge

I stared at 6 garbage bags, feeling a sense of completion, yet also a sense of defeat; those 6 bags held some of my greatest fears, aspirations, and failures. It made me question the difference between letting go for your own sanity and giving up the fight. Was this a new beginning, or the beginning of the end?

For fuck’s sake Charlotte, they’re just clothes.

Everyone’s first thought of the morning is probably of the day ahead; maybe it’s hopeful and filled with good news, or maybe it’s a moment of dread as you know a tough challenge is ahead. For me, it’s always the latter, because the hardest part of the day for me is often getting dressed.

I Love Stretch Marks

i love stretch marks - body positive my tickle trunk

One night when I was about 15, I laid on my right side in bed while reading what I’m sure was the newest Harry Potter novel. I idly ran my left hand over the curve of my hip as I turned the pages, a distracted movement as I slid my hand seamlessly from my waist, down to my thigh, and back. I thought nothing of it until I paid attention to what I was feeling: lines, grooves. I looked over to give it a closer look, having never really noticed them until now, and I smiled, turning back to the book while continuing to stroke my hip, this time with purpose and pride.

My Body-Positive Journey

my tickle trunk - my body-positive journey

I’m a woman, so inherently, I was born into a world setting me up with enough body issues and social scrutiny to last me into two more lifetimes. And I’m not alone. Every day I see people go between “my body is blindingly gorgeous, you aren’t worthy” to “I wish I was blind, I’m not worth anything” three times before we even get dressed. So for this reason, I want to start a series about My Body-Positive Journey, and I hope you’ll make it your journey too. We could all use a little more positivity in our life, and 80% of that needed positivity could probably be directed towards yourself.
